Euclid's
Postulates is
a three movement work exploring Euclidian Geometry. Movement I:
Locus,
or, the
line or surface made up of all the positions of a point or line
satisfying some condition.
An extended front ensemble and percussion introduction launches the
full ensemble into an aggressive opening statement. Throughout the
rest of the movement, high energy upper wind colors contrast the
strong low brass melody allowing the individual "lines" of each
voice to be clearly defined aurally and visually.
Movement II:
Cylinders
and Spheres,
or,
the locus of points equidistant from a given point is a circle.
Contrasting the energy of movement I we explore the softer side of
mathematics in the form of circles and spheres. A mellophone solo
leads us into a emotionally moving full ensemble hit that will
provide ample visual possibilities for your guard.
Movement III:
Irrational
Numbers
or,
a number that cannot
be written as a simple fraction - the decimal goes on forever without
repeating.
Odd meters, angular hits and high energy rhythms signify the
difficulty of dividing irrational numbers. This movement leads
directly to a restatement of the original opening theme from movement
I and finishes with a high energy ending that is sure to bring your
audience to its feet!
